Crime on rise in Odisha! Over 1.70 lakh cases reported last year

Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed a surge in crime over the last five years. Alone in 2022, over 1.70 lakh criminal cases were reported in the state.

As per the data released by Home (MoS) Minister Tusharkanti Behera in Odisha Assembly, total 1,78,190 various criminal cases were registered in different police stations last year, an increase by 22,770 against the year 2021.

Of 1,78,190, there were 1379 murder cases, 626 dacoity cases, 2998 robbery cases, 5467 burglary cases, 14893 theft cases, 5352 swindling cases, 2248 rioting cases, 3184 rape cases, 11663 Motor Vehicle accident cases and 1,30,380 miscellany cases in 2022.

Replying to a question asked by BJP MLA Kusum Tete in the House on the number of criminal cases registered in last five years starting from 2018, the Minister presented the list containing detailed data.

The data showed that total 1,55,420 criminal cases were reported in the year 2021, of which 1394 were murder cases, 552 dacoity cases, 2826 robbery cases, 5133 burglary cases, 13024 theft cases, 5138 swindling cases, 2220 rioting cases, 3327 rape cases and 10986 road accident cases and 110823 miscellany cases.

The figures showed that the number of murder cases in 2022 declined by only 15 and rape cases by 143 as compared to 2021.

This apart, total 1,34,230 criminal cases were reported in Odisha in 2020, 1,21,525 in 2019 and 1,07,408 in 2018.
