Berhampur: In a deeply disturbing development, another case of sexual assault on a minor has emerged from Ganjam district, further shocking the State barely weeks after the Gopalpur gangrape incident.

The latest incident was reported from Berhampur town. Acting on a complaint filed by the minor girl, the Berhampur Police registered a case and initiated an investigation.

The accused, Bhabani Prasad Das, has been arrested by the Baidyanathpur Police. He is the President of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh and also serves as Chairman of the Workers’ Welfare Board.

This case comes in the wake of the June 15 gangrape of a Plus III student from a Berhampur college. The student was assaulted sexually while visiting Gopalpur beach with a male friend. In connection with that case, the police have arrested six individuals and detained four juveniles.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) have both sought detailed reports from the Odisha Government regarding the Gopalpur gangrape.
