Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Saturday arrested a state government official while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor.

The official identified as Dayanidhi Samal is posted as an Executive Engineer with the General Public Health department.

According to reports, Samal had demanded the amount from a contractor named Alekh Chandra Majhi for clearing bills amounting to Rs 1.84 lakh.

Vigilance officials laid a trap following a complaint by Majhi. The sleuths caught Samal red-handed while he was accepting the bribe at a pre-decided location between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Besides, the anti-corruption wing officials conducted simultaneous raids at three places including Samal’s residence in Cuttack, his ancestral home and office in the capital city.

During the raid, the sleuths unearthed cash amounting to Rs 9.30 lakh, bank deposits of Rs 25 lakh, jewellery, gold coins and a luxury car.

This apart, the sleuths have come to know about three plots of an estimated value of Rs 1 crore, sources said.
