Cyclone ‘Asani’: Depression over BoB intensifies into Deep Depression

Bhubaneswar: The depression formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, informed the Regional Meteorological Centre here today evening.

The weathermen further predicted that the deep depression is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 8 morning and into a severe cyclonic storm by the same day evening.

The deep depression lay centered 1,180 north-north-east of Puri. It is moving in northwest direction at 20 kmph.

On May 8 at 5:30 pm – the maximum sustained surface wind speed will be 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph –  severe cyclonic storm

On May 9 at 5:30 am –  maximum sustained surface wind speed will be 105-115 kmph gusting to 125 kmph –  severe cyclonic storm

On May 9 5:30 pm  – maximum sustained surface wind speed will be 105-115 kmph gusting to 125 kmph –  severe cyclonic storm

On May 10 5:30 am – maximum sustained surface wind speed 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph – severe cyclonic storm

On May 10 5:30 pm – maximum sustained surface wind speed 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph – severe cyclonic storm

Earlier in the day, India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra forecasted the cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ may not make landfall in Odisha.

“The cyclone may not make landfall in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh. After reaching Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts on May 10 evening, the cyclone is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast. The system will continue to move in the direction over the sea being parallel to the Odisha coast,” added Mohapatra.
