Cyclone Asani not to intensify further; Check rainfall forecast for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Cyclonic Storm ‘Asani’ over the Bay of Bengal is not likely to intensify further and will weaken gradually, informed Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena today quoting Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, DG, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

After nearing Andhra Pradesh coast this evening, the system is likely to change its course and travel along/ off Odisha coast, he said.

As per the IMD, the cyclone is very likely to move nearly northwestwards till 10th May night and reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coast. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. It is likely to weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours.

The agency has issued heavy rainfall warning for several districts of Odisha in connection with the system.

May 10:

  • Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri.
  • Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha.

May 11: 

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) at isolated places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.
  • Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at most places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha.

May 12: 

  • Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore.
  • Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha and at a few places over districts of interior Odisha.
