Cyclonic storm Jawad likely to reach Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts around December 4 morning

Bhubaneswar: Well marked low pressure over Andaman Sea that is likely to intensify into depression during next 12 hours will turn into cyclonic storm Jawad during the subsequent 24 hours, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today.

Yesterday’s Low Pressure area over central parts of Andaman Sea moved westnorthwestwards and became a Well marked Low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Andaman Sea at 5.30 am today. It lies over southeast Bay of Bengal at 8.30 am today.

It is likely to move westnorthwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours. Then it is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.

According to Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for Tropical Cyclones over North Indian Ocean of IMD, the Cyclonic storm Jawad is likely to reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts around December 4 morning. Thereafter, it is likely to move north-northeastwards.

Rainfall warning:

December 2: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

December 3: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

December 4: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, north & interior districts of Odisha and also over Gangetic west Bengal.

December 5: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over West Bengal & Odisha and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya and Tripura.

December 6: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

Wind warning:

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Andaman Sea during next 6 hours.

It would further increase to wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, from today, December 2 evening.

Gale winds speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph likely to prevail over central Bay of Bengal from the morning of December 3 and gradually increase becoming 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from the morning of December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coasts from the mid-night of December 3 and increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from December 4 morning, for the subsequent 12 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph also likely to commence along & off West Bengal coast from December 4 morning and become Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from the evening of December 4 for the subsequent 12 hours.

Sea condition:

Sea condition will be rough to very rough over Andaman Sea, along & off Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, during next 6 hours.

Sea condition would become very rough to High over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands & Andaman Sea from today evening for the subsequent 12 hours.

Sea condition would be High over central Bay of Bengal on December 3 and High to very High over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal from the early morning of December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.

Sea condition will be rough to very rough over along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coast from the mid-night of December 3 and become High to very High from December 4 afternoon, for the subsequent 12 hours. It will be very rough to High along & off West Bengal coast from December 4 morning and High to very High from the same evening for the subsequent 12 hours.

Fishermen Warning:

Fishermen are advised not to venture into Andaman Sea on December 2, 2021, into southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on December 2 and 3, over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh – Odisha- West Bengal coasts during December 3 to 5, 2021.

Fishermen out at Sea are advised to return to coast with immediate effect.

Expected impact:

  • Localized Flooding of roads, inundation and water logging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the affected region.
  • Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
  • Disruption of traffic in major cities due to water logging in roads leading to increased travel time.
  • Minor damage to kutcha roads.
  • Possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure.
  • Localized Landslides/Mudslides
  • Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

Action Suggested:

  • Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.
  • Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
  • Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.
  • Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
  • Harvest the ripen crops like Paddy & Horticultural crops and also secure the harvested crops securely from the damage due to rain and strong winds.
