Cyclone Sitrang in 2022 update: Possible landfall area varies from Andhra to Odisha to Bangladesh

Bhubaneswar: While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today forecasted about the formation of a cyclone over west-central Bay of Bengal after October 22, there is large variation among various weather models with respect to track and peak intensification of the system.

The landfall point is varying from north Andhra Pradesh (GFS) to north Odisha (ECMWF) to Bangladesh coast (NCUM), the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi said today.

The peak intensification is varying from cyclonic storm (ECMWF) to very severe cyclonic storm (GFS), the RSMC added.

A low pressure area is likely to form over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, the IMD said today.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression by 22nd October morning over central Bay of Bengal. It is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm over westcentral Bay of Bengal subsequently, it added.

The system will be named as Cyclone Sitrang in the case of its intensification into a cyclonic storm.
