Cyclone Yaas Update: Damages expected in vulnerable Odisha districts

Bhubaneswar:  Cyclonic Storm Yaas, which  is very likely to reach northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts very close to Chandbali-Dhamra port as a very severe cyclonic storm by  May 26 early morning, is likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around Balasore, during noon of May 26.

The IMD Regional Centre here said the impending very severe cyclonic storm may cause the following damages in coastal districts of North Odisha and adjoining interior districts:

1  Total destruction of thatched houses/ extensive damage to kutcha houses. Some damage to
pucca houses.

2 Potential threat from flying objects.

3 Bending/ uprooting of power and communication poles.

4  Major damage to Kutcha and and Pucca roads.

5 Flooding of escape routes.

6 Disruption of railways, overhead power lines and signaling systems.

7 Widespread damage to standing crops, plantations, orchards, falling of green coconuts and
tearing of palm fronds.

8 Blowing down of bushy trees like mango.

9 Small boats, country crafts may get detached from moorings.

10 Visibility severely affected.

Following actions are suggested for the same districts :

1 Suspension of fishing operation and movement of ships in disturbed areas.

2 Ports along the east coast of India may take necessary pre-cautions.

3 Naval base operations may maintain necessary pre-cautions

4 Tourism activities may be restricted over these areas.

5 Mobilise evacuation from coastal areas of North Odisha.

5 Judicious regulation of rail and road traffic.

6 People in affected areas to remain indoors.

7 Preparatory action before the cyclones.
