Cyclonic storm ‘DAYE’ crosses Odisha coast, to weaken gradually

Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic storm ‘DAYE’ crossed Odisha coast close to Gopalpur during midnight triggering heavy rainfall in southern and south-west region of the State. It will weaken gradually into deep depression during next six hours.

“The cyclonic storm ‘DAYE’ over northwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards during past six hours with a speed about 23 kmph and crossed south Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coast close to Gopalpur during 0030 to 0130 hours IST of 21st September, 2018,” Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre here today.

The cyclonic storm lay centred at 0230 hrs IST of 21st September, 2018 over south Odisha near latitude 19.50N and longitude 84.50E, about 40 km west-northwest of Gopalpur and about 150 km east-southeast of Bhawanipatna. It would continue to move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a deep depression during next 06 hours, Bhubaneswar MeT Director HR Biswas said.

After the cyclonic storm DAYE made a landfall close to Gopalpur, it triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places including Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts of Odisha.

As the storm turned into deep depression, the southern and south-west regions of the State are likely to experience heavy downpour in next 12 hours.
