Daily-wager dies due to asphyxiation while cleaning well in Odisha’s Ganjam

Buguda: A man died today due to asphyxiation while cleaning a well at the second lane of Srikrushna Nagar-Annapurna Nagar locality in Buguda town of Ganjam district.

The deceased man was identified as 55-year-old Dhoba Swain, who belonged to Kholakhali village.

According to a source, the man was cleaning a three-foot-deep well near an under-construction house owned by Harihara Patra of Srikrushna Nagar when the mishap took place at around 11.00 am.

Three persons were engaged by Patra in the cleaning work. The two others namely Khadala Sahani and Manu Sethy were outside the well. The victim man had entered the well and later succumbed.

On being informed, Buguda police reached the spot and sought the help of local fire services personnel. Swain was rescued and brought to a hospital in Buguda for treatment, where he was declared ‘dead’.

Police have seized the body and sent it to a hospital in Bhanjanagar for post-mortem.

“A primary investigation suggests that the daily-wager died due to asphyxiation,” an official said.
