Bhubaneswar/Puri: The total number of deaths reached 13 today as two more injured victims of the tragic Puri firecracker explosion succumbed in the evening while undergoing treatment in critical condition.
This was informed by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Odisha through a press release.
“As per the information of the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department, two more persons died due to the unfortunate fire tragedy in Puri town. In this connection, the death toll rose to 13 (thirteen). Puri district Collector has taken steps for payment of Rs 4 Lakh each towards ex-gratia assistance to the next of kin of deceased persons. Presently, 17 patients are under medical treatment in different Hospitals,” the SRC press release mentioned.
Meanwhile, Town police have picked up and detained four firecracker traders from Charichhak locality in Nimapada in connection with the Chandan Jatra explosion case, who are being interrogated.
Worth mentioning, CM previously announced that total expenses incurred for the treatment of injured victims will be borne by the State government from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
The fatal mishap occurred on the night of May 29 at Narendra Pokhari (a Holy Pond) in the pilgrim town Puri during the performance of Chandan Jatra rituals. More than 30 persons were critically injured in the firecracker explosion and were later admitted to hospitals in Puri and Cuttack.
Necessary permission from local police for igniting firecrackers was not obtained.
