Yet another debt-ridden farmer committed suicide in Odisha’s Bargarh district today. The deceased farmer identified as Lokanath Sahu of Potapalli village in the district allegedly committed by consuming poison.

Police have seized Lokanath’s body and have sent it for post mortem. The local ABDO, who visited Potapalli following the death, conducted an inquiry into the tragic incident.

According to reports, Lokanath had borrowed over Rs 2 lakh and had grown crops on 13 acres. He was under mental stress since his crops were ruined under pest attack and allegedly consumed pesticide today in the morning.

Lokanath was rushed to the district headquarters hospital here by his family members in a critical condition where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

“On getting reports that a farmer has committed suicide by consuming pesticide, we met his family members. Family members have admitted that he had consumed poison. The exact cause of the death will be known after post mortem is available,” informed Hrudayananda Nikhandia, ABDO.
