Debt-ridden farmer ends life in Odisha

Bolangir: In a fresh incident of farmer suicide in Odisha, a man ended his life at Barkani village under Sadar police limits in Bolangir district today.

Sources said the farmer identified as Bhaktabandhu Dandasena consumed poison due to crop loss and loan burden. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). However, he died while undergoing treatment.

His family members alleged that Bhaktabandhu was depressed due to cross loss owing to scanty rainfall. Burdened by loan he had taken for cultivation, the farmer took the extreme step.

On the contrary, the state Government recently said that 38 farmers reportedly committed suicide in last three financial years; However, none  of the cases was linked to crop loss and loan burden.

“Not a single farmer in the state has committed suicide for reasons relating to farming in last three financial years. The allegations were probed by respective district administrations but none of them was due to financial burdern and crop loss,” Agriculture Minister Arun Sahu had informed the Odisha Assembly in a written reply on Wednesday.
