Nuakhai will be celebrated in Odisha on September 1 this year

Bhubaneswar: A day after Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Odisha Assembly Jaya Narayan Mishra urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to declare two-day local holiday for Nuakhai celebrations in Western Odisha, former Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo made a similar demand today. In a letter to the CM, the BJD leader requested that all offices,  banks, schools, etc of Western Odisha be declared holiday for three days to celebrate the festival.

“Nuakhai is the major agricultural festival of Western Odisha. Nuakhai means “Nua” for new and “Khai” for food. Nuakhai is thought to date back to Vedic times, about 3,000 yeas ago. The newly harvest cropsare worshipped and people celebrate it by eating. Nua Khai is particularly important in the life and Culture of Western Odisha. The festival is seen as a ray of hope and celebrated on Bhadraba Suklayapakhya Panchami Tithi. So on the special occasion of Nuakhai, all offices, schools, banks, etc of Western Odisha should be declared as holiday for 3 day to celebrate the festival peacefully,” the ex-parliamentarian from Balangir wrote in the letter.
