Deep depression likely in next 24 hrs; Heavy rain predicted in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood is likely to turn into a deep depression during the next 24 hours resulting in heavy rainfall in Odisha.

“The Depression over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood moved Northwards with a speed of about 35 KMPH during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 07 December, 2017 near Latitude 12.0º N and Longitude 88.0 ºE, about 870 km southeast of Gopalpur. The system is very likely to move North-Northwestwards and reach North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts around 9th December morning. The system is likely to intensify further into a Deep Depression during next 24 hours,” a bulletin of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said.

“However, there is a probability of slight weakening of the system when it reaches near north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts,” it said.

“Rain or thundershower likely to occur at a few places in the coastal adjoining Koraput, Gajapati & Malkangiri districts during the next 24 hours and thereafter widespread rain or thundershower in coastal districts with many places in interior districts till 10th December,” it forecasted.

After 24 hours, heavy rainfall at one or two places in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Khorda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Malkangiri & Koraput very likely to occur in subsequent 48 hours, it warned.

Distant Cautionary Signal Number One (DC-I) has been hoisted at Paradeep & Gopalpur Ports in Odisha.

Squally winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph very likely to prevail along and off Odisha coasts from 7th December evening to 10th December morning and decrease thereafter.

Sea condition would be rough to very rough along and off Odisha coasts from 7th December evening to 10th December morning for which fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into sea in the first half of 7th December and not to venture into sea from 7th December evening up to 10th December.
