Deficient rainfall in 36 blocks of Odisha

Even as heavy rains have caused floods in many parts of Odisha in the recent past, as many as 36 blocks of the state have received deficit to severe deficit rainfall during June 15 to August 25 this year seriously affecting the agriculture sector in the state.
According to the 11th meeting of Crop Weather Watch Group Committee, which held its meeting recently, the average rainfall in, the state till August 25 was 323 mm, which was 12.5% more than the normal rainfall, whereas the cumulative rainfall (924 mm.) from June 1 to August 25 was 9.5% more than the normal rainfall.
The block-wise cumulative rainfall within the period indicated that one block in Malkangiri district is still experiencing scanty rainfall while six other blocks in five districts have experienced severe deficit in rainfall. Overall, 29 blocks in 17 districts are still having deficit rainfall.
However, Director, IMD Sarat Sahu informed that the rainfall is likely to increase in the coming days as a low pressure had been formed over the Bay of Bengal. Further, heavy rainfall is expected from September 1 due to formation of another low pressure between 1st and 3rd September.
Meanwhile, the directorate of agriculture and food processing has been asked to direct the block level agricultural officers to visit the block office to examine and ascertain the proper functioning of the rain gauges as 36 blocks are still having deficit to severe deficit and scanty rainfall in that period.n
