Delhi Police files three chargesheets on Patiala House Court violence

New Delhi, July 23:

Delhi Police has filed three separate chargesheets accusing three lawyers and suspended BJP legislator O.P. Sharma of the violence in the Patiala House Courts complex in February.

The police had earlier registered four separate first information reports (FIR) on the February 15 and 17 violence at the Patiala House Courts complex where some lawyers were allegedly involved in attacking mediapersons and JNU students, including then arrested student union president Kanhaiya Kumar.

Delhi Police filed the three chargesheets on July 19 before Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria, who has slated the matter for September 22 for consideration.

In the first chargesheet filed on the February 15 incident where journalists were assaulted, police accused three lawyers Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma of various charges dealing with rioting, criminal intimidation, causing hurt and mischief and alleged that three lawyers were instigating the mob that attacked journalists.

The second chargesheet was filed against suspended legislator O.P. Sharma, allegedly involved in assaulting a CPI activist outside the court on February 15. BJP leader O.P. Sharma is chargesheeted under various charges dealing with voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and common intention.

The third chargesheet was filed in the February 17 incident against Vikram Singh Chauhan and Yashpal Sharma for assaulting an advocate inside the Patiala House Courts Complex.

Police has cited CCTV footage where lawyers and Sharma were caught in action to support its charges.

However, a Delhi Police official told IANS that the matter regarding the February 17 incident when JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was assaulted by a mob while being taken amid tight security to a magisterial court for remand hearing, is still being probed. The investigation report in the case will be filed later. (IANS)
