Depression forms over Bay, Cyclone ‘Asani’ formation tomorrow; 100 kmph max wind speed likely

Bhubaneswar: A Depression formed over Bay of Bengal today at around 11.30 am while the system is likely to become a Cyclonic Storm tomorrow (May 8), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted.

It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till 10th May evening and reach Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, the IMD said.

The cyclone may attain a maximum wind speed of 100 kmph over the Bay of Bengal on May 9 and 10, the agency forecasted in its bulletin issued at 2.30 pm today.

Wind Warning

7th May: Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely to prevail over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast & Eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

8th May: Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is likely to prevail over Southeast & adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and would gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 65-75 gusting to 85 kmph over the same region from 8th May evening. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

9th May: Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely to prevail over central parts of Bay of Bengal during morning hours and would gradually increase thereafter becoming 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph over the same region.

10th May: Gale wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is likely to prevail around the system center over Westcentral and adjoining Northwest & Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over coastal districts of north Andhra Pradesh.

11th May: Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely to prevail over northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over coastal districts of Odisha and adjoining coastal north Andhra Pradesh.

Impact on Odisha

Rainfall Forecast and Warning:

10th May: Light to moderate rainfall very likely to commence from 10th May evening at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall (7 -11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

11th May: Light to moderate rainfall very likely at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.

Wind Warning: Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off Odisha coast.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea area over central parts of Bay of Bengal on 9th and 10th May, and over Northwest Bay of Bengal on 10th and 11th May.
