DHH doctor lands in Vigilance net in Odisha’s Subarnapur

Dr Kar was allegedly demanding bribe from patients for the surgery which is done free of cost in government hospitals across the State.

Subarnapur: Vigilance sleuths have arrested a government doctor on bribery charges in Subarnapur district of Odisha here today. The accused was identified as Dr. Sanjib Kumar Kar, Opthalmologist at the district headquarters hospital. He was apprehended while demanding and accepting bribe Rs.5,500 from a complainant for conducting cataract surgery of his uncle.

Dr Kar was allegedly demanding bribe from patients for the surgery which is done free of cost in government hospitals across the State. As per the complainant, he came from a poor background and had approached the doctor several times for cataract surgery of his ailing uncle, an octogenarian. But Dr Kar insisted on payment of the bribe before the surgery. Finding no other way, the complainant reached out to the Vigilance authorities.

On Monday, the anti-corruption bureau team caught him red-handed while accepting bribe from the complainant.
The entire bribe money was recovered from his possession.

Meanwhile, simultaneous searches are going on at three locations of Dr Kar in Balangir and Subarnapur districts.

In this connection, a case has been registered with Sambalpur Vigilance under Prevention of Corruption Amendment Act, 2018. Investigation is underway.
