Diarrhoea scare grips Odisha; Govt issues advisory

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of diarrhoea outbreak in three districts of Odisha, the State Government has issued an advisory to check the spread of water-borne disease in other regions of the state.

The fresh advisory on Acute Diarrhoeal Disease Outbreak Investigation and Response has been released by State Surveillance Unit, of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), Directorate of Health Services, Odisha.

So far, 12 people have died of cholera and diarrhoea (10 cholera deaths) in Rayagada, Gajapati and Nuapada districts.

According to reports, 10 people have died and more than 200 persons have been infected with cholera in Kashipur Block of Rayagada district. The disease has spread to 197 villages in the tribal-dominated district.

After Kashipur, diarrhoea outbreak has claimed one life at Jatagada village under Komana block of Nuapada district yesterday. More than 30 persons were infected with the disease in Komana.

“More than 20 patients have been hospitalised with diarrhoea in Nuapada district. The health workers including ASHA, Anganwadi have been directed to conduct door-to-door health surveys in affected areas. The district administration is taking all precautionary measures to tackle the situation,” said Nuapada district health supervisor Rushimohan Shabar.

Moreover, one person has died and 10 more persons were critical at Govindpur village under Mohana block in Gajapati district.

“Five patients have been admitted to hospital with symptoms of diarrhoea. The medical team has been deployed in the affected village. The disease is suspected to have spread due to contaminated water,” said Mohana CHC Medical Officer In-charge Dr. Namita Panda.

It is pertinent to mention that waterborne diseases like Diarrhoea, Dysentry, Jaundice, Typhoid are important public health diseases that cause outbreaks which lead to cases & deaths in the community in a short span of time. Out of all causes of Acute Diarrhoeal Diseases, Cholera accounts for 5-10% among other organisms.
