Diarrhoea situation in Odisha’s Kashipur grim; one more dies

Rayagada: Diarrhoea-related deaths continue unabated in Kashipur area of Rayagada district in Odisha as one more patient died today.

The deceased has been identified as Gurubari Dora, a resident of Tikarpada village under Kashipur Block.

According to reports, the 55-year-old woman was undergoing treatment at Tikiri Primary Health Centre for diarrhoea. On July 27, she was shifted to the Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Later, she was referred to SLN Medical College & Hospital in Koraput. However, without visiting to the state-run hospital, she had returned to her village, where she succumbed this morning.

“The patient was hospitalised here till July 27. Her health condition had also improved. But, suspecting kidney related ailments, we had referred her to Rayagada hospital after consulting with a medicine specialist. After observing her condition, she was further referred to the SLN Hospital, Koraput. But, she preferred to returned to home without going to Koraput. We heard that she died between 8 am and 9 am at her residence today,” informed Dr. R. Rama Rao, Medical Officer, Tikiri PHC.

“I had taken her to Rayagada for treatment. After she showed sign of recovery, I came back to home with her following permission from the doctor on July 28. She was completely fine at home. A day later, she suffered from diarrhoea following which she died today,” said deceased patient’s brother.

With the fresh fatality due to diarrhoea, the toll as per unofficial figures rose to 13 in Odisha. However, the official figures showed that total 10 persons have died of the water-borne disease so far.
