Diarrhoea takes two lives in Odisha’s Bolangir; patients travelled from outside

Kantabanji: Amid the diarrhoea scare because of the rising number of deaths in Sundargarh’s Rourkela city, Kantabanji town in Bolangir district today reported two deaths due to the contagious disease.

The deceased were identified as Meera Sahu from Pudapadar village and Santosh Majhi from Muribahal village in Bolangir district. One of them died late yesterday night and another died today morning.

As many as six persons are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Kantabanji, a private source said.

When contacted, Bolangir chief district medical officer (CDMO) Kuber Chandra Mohanta said, “Two persons have died of diarrhoea so far, following which, I have asked the local doctors concerned to immediately visit and take preventive measures in the two villages under reference.”

“Santosh is a migrant labourer and was admitted to the hospital in serious condition. He had recently returned from Hyderabad and suffered from the contagious disease when travelling by train. Another patient who had previously undergone a major operation at Bissam Katak was brought to this hospital after she suffered from diarrhoea and she died while undergoing treatment,” a senior official said.

“The two deceased were not residents and had come from outside,” the official added.

“A child alone suffering from diarrhoea is presently undergoing treatment in the General Ward of this hospital. However, we have no confirmation that the disease has spread in Kantabanji,” a doctor stated.
