Distressed farmer kills self in Odisha

Troubled by unpaid debts and crop failure, another agriculturalist in Nuapada district of Odisha committed suicide by hanging self, today.

The rising tide of farmer suicides refuses to stop in Odisha with toll exceeding 50, while the Special Relief Commissioner, GVV Sarma putting the official figures at 41, on October 29.

Sadhu Nial of Komana village in Nuapada was found hanging inside his house by his mother when she came back from the market, today. Family members claimed that he was under severe mental pressure due to crop failure and unpaid loans.

Nial had borrowed Rs 15,000 from money lenders, while his wife had taken Rs 30,000 from a local self help group in the village. He was very worried about repaying the debt due to failure of paddy crops in his 3 acres of land.

Police are investigating the case.
