Eco retreat hub built at Rs 9 crore falters amid administrative impasse

Berhampur/Gopalpur: An ambitious eco retreat hub built near Gopalpur beach of Ganjam at a whopping cost of around Rs 9 crore has suffered red tape. Despite its completion in 2020, the mega project still awaits to be commissioned.

Priority was earlier given to developing the beach destinations like Gopalpur, Tampara and Sunapur in the district.

A source said that due to a lack of adequate maintenance, the permanent cottages, valuable installations, and furniture and fixtures have become dilapidated over the last few years. A children’s park, a gigantic lawn, swimming pool and parking space etc have also run down.

Construction work of the project was started in 2016 on the seabed spanning over an area of around 45 acres near IPS Guest House in Gopalpur locality. Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) was then entrusted with the project construction work.

Accordingly, at least 14 air-conditioned permanent cottages were built including a wooden bridge meant to provide access from cottages to the sea beach.

After the construction work was completed, the BeDA informed the district Tourism department about it for handover. However, the department seems to have taken no steps in this regard.
