ECoR steps up measures to prevent fire mishaps

The Indian Railways has asked the general managers of Zonal Railways to take all possible steps to prevent accidents and improve the overall safety of the passengers.

The directive of the Indian Railways came during the address of Railways minister Mallikarjun Kharge at the two-day meeting of the Railway General Managers in New Delhi that concluded on Wednesday.train fire

The minister asked the general managers to pay proper attention to the maintenance of railway assets, including the fixed assets and rolling stocks and ensure that there is should not be any laxity related to safety measures.

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has given top priority to the safety of the passengers, an ECoR release said here on Wednesday.

Surprise inspections by senior railway officers even at night are being organised to keep a strict vigil in this regard. Strict action shall be taken against those found responsible for lapses on their duty, the release added.

ECoR has also taken steps to form a comprehensive action plan to prevent fire on trains. Each passenger rake would be thoroughly checked and best quality of fire retardant material would be used.

Besides it has already geared up its machinery to prevent carrying of fire hazard items in all trains.

Carrying inflammable items in train journey is strictly prohibited and the ECoR has already formed special squads to keep a strict vigil o­n carrying such items in trains to ensure safety of passengers.

Carrying gas cylinders, acid, petrol, kerosene and crackers during train journey is a punishable offence under the Railways Act, 1989 and an offender may get an imprisonment of up to three years.

Steps have already been taken to make train passengers and rail users aware of the dangers of carrying crackers and explosive substances.

To make the train journey safer, the ECoR has also urged passengers to be careful and not to carry and also not let their co-passengers carry inflammable objects while travelling.
If any passenger is found carrying such items, the co-passengers are requested to inform the railway staff, the release added.
