Bhubaneswar: With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to form the government in Odisha with a simple majority ousting Naveen Patnaik-led BJD's 24-year rule, many heavyweights in state politics lost and won the elections this time.

While BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik retained his Hinjili seat, the 5-time MLA lost to BJP's Laxman Bag with a margin of over 15,000 votes in the Assembly Elections-2024, as per ECI's latest data.

Several BJD leaders including Susanta Singh, Sanjay Das Burma, Debi Prasad Mishra and Bikram Keshari Arukha bit the dust in the polls due to 'anti-incumbency' factor.

Even as the BJP swept the Assembly polls by winning 78 seats in 147-Assembly seats in Odisha, many bigwigs in the saffron party also faced defeat in the elections.

On the other hand, Congress, which retained its 3rd position as opposition party in Odisha Legislative Assembly, managed to win 14 seats this time, a jump from 9 in 2019 Assembly Elections.

While Congress leader Mohammad Moquim's daughter Sofia Firdous won Barabati-Cuttack Assembly seat, Sagar Charan Das, the son of Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das, was elected to the State Assembly for the first time from Bhawanipatna. Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati retained his Jeypore seat in Koraput district.

However, Bhakta Das, who was fighting from Narla Assembly seat, lost the election. Similarly, Congress leaders Niranjan Patnaik and Jayadev Jena were defeated from Bhandaripokhari and Anandapur Assembly seats respectively.

Former BJD leader Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who was contesting as an Independent candidate from Ghasipura, lost to BJD's Badri Narayan Patra with a margin of 13,811 votes.
