Elderly couple consumes poison; woman dies, husband critical in Odisha

Jashipur: An elderly woman died reportedly by suicide after torture inflicted by her son and daughter-in-law became unbearable in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today. The elderly woman was identified as Bhanumati from Bishida village under Jashipur police limits of the district.

Bhanumati and husband Ankura Behera were found wreathing in pain in their house when daughter-in-law came back from the agriculture field. Suspecting that the elderly couple might have consumed poison, the daughter-in-law immediately informed their son Rajeev.

With the help of locals, family members of the elderly woman and her husband admitted them to the Bhanjakia hospital. The couple was then shifted to Jashipur hospital and then Karanjia Sub-divisional Hospital. Bhanumati died while undergoing treatment whereas husband Ankur’s condition was stated to be critical.

Though it could not be established yet as to why the couple consumed poison, police after being informed launched an investigation into the matter.
