Elderly sick widow carried on a bamboo basket to hospital in Odisha

In a pathetic state of affairs, an elderly woman , who was sick for last one month was carried in a bamboo basket to the Jeypore sub divisional  hospital by a young man from Dangaguda village in Odisha .

The heart touching scene in Rayagada district on Sunday of a man carrying a sick old woman in a bamboo basket, wrenched many hearts and they called 108 ambulance services and police.

The emergency services ambulance did not turn up, but local police did and rescued the woman and admitted her to the hospital.

The patient, a widow called Lakmi Majhi of Dangaguda village, which is just two kilometers from Jeypore town, has been suffering from fever, vomiting and dysentery since last month.

Unable to see her suffering, a village youth, Gopinath decided to bring her to the sub divisional  hospital on a bamboo basket.

Gopinath on been questioned in the hospital seeing police  almost turned back fearing prosecution. But the local police intervened in time and rescued the old woman and got her admitted into the hospital.

The good samaritan Gopinath had hung two bamboo baskets on each side of a bamboo stick with  ropes. On one side was Laxmi and on the other side he had kept three big stones and a puppy to balance her.

“Ambulance did not come, I came crawling from the house than the village youth brought me to hospital on a bamboo basket” , Lakhmi said.
