Elderly woman’s body left unattended in Odisha village for 18 hours

Boudh: As the world is celebrating Mother’s Day today to honour the significance of mothers in the lives of people, the body of a mother was left unattended for 18 hours at Balasinga village under Sadar block in Boudh district.

The woman, identified as Sulabha Pradhan, was living at a house constructed under the Biju Pucca Yojana on roadside of the National Highway at Balasinga. On Sunday morning, Pradhan’s only child Jambu found her dead at the house.

Pradhan’s daughter Jambu said as she was married to a youth from another caste, the villagers refused to lend shoulders to carry her mother’s body for cremation. Hence, the 80-year-old woman’s body remained unattended in her house for 18 hours until members of an NGO, Gangadhara Meher Swachhasebi Samiti reached the house.

They took the old woman’s body for cremation and performed last rites with the help of the district administration at the Boudh Rajghat.
