Keonjhar: A forest personnel was suspended and three more were served ‘show-cause’ notices today for dereliction of duty in connection with the death of a female elephant and its newborn calf in Keonjhar district on November 7. The deaths were confirmed to have occurred due to an arrow attack.

Former forester Purnachandra Mahanta has been placed under suspension. Ranger Shivaji Mohan Rao, forester in charge Jadumani Rana and guard Jharana Sahu have been slapped with the notices.

“The administrative step was taken as part of a detailed probe which is underway. Actions will be taken on being found guilty,” Keonjhar Divisional Forest Officer Dhamdhere Dhanraj Hanumant said.

Decomposed carcasses of the two pachyderms were found near Kuliapala village in Kalapata reserve forest under Talapada section and Telkoi range of Keonjhar division. The forest personnel found the decomposed bodies after some locals complained of bad odour coming from the nearby area.
