The state Crime Branch (CB) today took over the case of elephant poaching in Odisha's Boudh district in which nine persons were arrested yesterday. The Wildlife Cell of the probe agency will investigate the case, sources said.

"A four-member team of the cell reached at the spot today and started investigation," said CB Special DG B.K Sharma.

Notably, nine elephant poachers were arrested from Kandara-Kachapaju area under Puruna Katak police limits in Boudh yesterday.

During a combing operation by the District Voluntary Force (DVF) in the area, the security personnel spotted these poachers armed with lathis and weapons moving suspiciously inside the forest and informed the Puruna Katak police station.

A bag having two tusks cut into eight pieces, three country-made guns, gun powder and an axe were seized from their possession.

Of the nine arrested, three are from Boudh district and six from Narsinghpur area in Cuttack district.
