Cuttack: An engineering student consumed poison after his girlfriend allegedly refused to refund his money. The victim died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here in the city.
According to reports, Sritam Swain, a 3rd year B.Tech student of Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology University (GIET) in Gunupur, and the resident of Paradip area in Jagatsinghpur district, had lent an amount of Rs 2 lakh to his girlfriend for treatment of her father.
The relationship between the young couple turned sour after Sritam asked his girlfriend for money. Even, the girl's brother had allegedly assaulted the youth physically and threatened to kill him.
Sritam, who was under stress over the issue in a past few days, booked a room in hotel in Badambadi area of Cuttack city on Wednesday and reportedly consumed poison. In critical condition, he made a videocall to his brother, who immediately contacted the Badambadi Police seeking assistance to save his brother's life.
Acting swiftly, the police reached the hotel and rushed the victim to the SCB Medical College & Hospital. After his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a private hospital where he succumbed yesterday.
A case in this regard has been filed at the Mangalabag Police Station. After autopsy, police handed over the body to family members and initiated probe into the case.
Police source said that an operation is underway to trace the girl, who was allegedly responsible behind suicide of the student.
The victim had reportedly shot a video while he was consuming poison inside hotel room.
