Enraged Odisha man fires at father-in-law after failing to trace wife

Kuchinda: A man allegedly opened fire today at his father-in-law suspecting that the elderly man would take away the former’s wife. This incident was reported from Bandhakani village under Mahulapali police limits of Sambalpur district.

According to a police source, the man identified as 23-year-old Bedavyas Sabar from Bhalupada of Baurigoda village in the district was in love with a woman and had gotten married nearly six years ago without the approval of the two families. The woman is the daughter of Kunjabandhu Rana.

Bedavyas used to work as a daily wager to eke out his living and meet his household expenses. The couple has a son, the source added.

After returning home, Bedavyas saw that his father-in-law was asking something to his wife. Later, the man enquired about it and wanted clarification from the woman.

As Bedavyas’s wife could not give him any satisfactory answer, the man got irritated and, from a country-made gun that he possessed, opened fire at the elderly man to take revenge.

However, the elderly man had a close shave as he ran away from the spot. Later, he lodged an FIR with the Mahulapali police. Acting on this, a team reached the spot and arrested Bedavyas.

Police seized the firearm used in the crime, 20 rounds of live bullet, and around 200 grams of gunpowder from the man’s possession.

A case (92/2023) has been registered in this connection and a probe initiated.
