Epidemic Diseases (Odisha Amendment) Bill passed in Assembly amid Opp uproar

Bhubaneswar: Amid the Opposition uproar, the State Assembly passed the Epidemic Diseases (Odisha Amendment) Bill, 2020 on the second day of the monsoon session today. As per the new bill, Covid norm violators could be fined up to Rs 1 lakh and two years jail term.

Senior Congress Legislator Tara Prasad Bahinipati on the premises of the State Assembly said the bill has been passed to put the Opposition MLAs in jail. The government was trying to take mileage by passing the bill, he added.

Targeting the State government, BJP MLA Jayanarayan Mishra said the previous law was enough to handle the situation due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“The new bill is an attempt to torture the Opposition leaders. The government has failed to tackle the situation. Had the police done its work properly, there would have been no issues,” the BJP Legislator added.
