Jeypore: A former sarpanch was grievously injured when suspected Maoists fired at him in broad daylight at Dandabadi weekly haat under Baipariguda police station limits near Jeypore in Odisha’s Koraput district.

Former sarpanch Anand Nayak, who has sustained bullet wounds on his stomach, head and chest, has been admitted to the Government Hospital at Jeypore.

According to eyewitnesses, two suspected Maoists indiscriminately fired at Anand while he ran for his life.

While locals rushed Anand to the hospital, the assailants managed to flee the spot.

On being informed Baipariguda police rushed to the spot and have launched an inquiry into the incident.

Panic has spread in the area following the incident.
