Experience the essence of Odisha at Kala Bhoomi

Bhubaneswar: Strolling past the traditional hut-shaped edifice of Kala Bhoomi at Pokhariput in Odisha capital, you’ll come across some exquisite paintings on the wall depicting the ethereal and beautiful culture of the state. Trees planted in and around add to its beauty.

The crafts museum, spread over 12.68 acres, is divided into two blocks – handicrafts and handloom. The building is a replica of old Odia-styled household with a traditional courtyard connecting the two sections.

While the handicraft has in store different and unique artworks of Odisha craftsmen, the handloom section will exhibit traditional textiles and weaves. Among the 1000 rare handloom collections that include Bomkai, Sambalpuri, Kataki, Berhampuri silk, Khandua, Tussar with applique works, sarees with mathematical formulae and yoga postures printed on them are sure to catch your eyes.

A special space in the Handloom section will have different types of looms showcasing tribal weaving patterns.

Tribal crafts, Dhokra and bell metal work, Pattachitra, wood carvings, household objects, ornaments, mythology/folklore depictions, palm-leaf paintings, etching, terracotta and applique work will be displayed in eight separate galleries at the museum.

Manager Sisir Rath said the project took two and a half years to complete. “Around 34.85 crore was spent on constructing this building and procuring artefacts and weaves from the interiors of our state,” he added.

He further said that the major attraction at the museum will be a gallery on Jagannath culture. “We have tried to bring together all the items used in daily rituals at the Jagannath temple. The gallery is under construction,” he said.

There is also a souvenir shop and a workshop centre for a live demonstration of artworks.

The museum was inaugurated yesterday by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, with great pomp and show, at its amphitheatre. It will be open for public from March 25.
