Experts call for efficient use of water in industry

‘Best Practices’ for water treatment should be followed in industrial operations to make efficient use of this scarce material and ensure its uninterrupted supply in future, experts said at a seminar on ‘Industrial Water Treatment: Challenges and Opportunities’ organized by the State Pollution Control Board here on Saturday.

“Growing urbanization, industrialization and diversified food production will create pressure on availability of water in the coming days,” Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra said addressing the seminar.

“Ensuring zero discharge of water through use and re-use of water, along with techniques like rain water harvesting, recharging of ground water level and recycling of waste water, are the means through which this scarce material should be protected,” he said.

Also a proper regulatory framework needs to be put in place to maintain equilibrium in supply and consumption of water among different sectors, the chief secretary said.

“As Odisha is fast emerging as a thermal power and industrial hub, we have to augment the agricultural and industrial resources that need heavy quantities of water. Technology is the only answer to bring a balance between demand and supply,” Development Commissioner Injeti Srinivas said on the occasion.

Issues relating to effluent treatment, industrial cooling water treatment, water quality, boiler water treatment in power plant, water chemistry for super critical boilers and various problems in plant operations were discussed during the meeting.

The seminar witnessed participation from noted scientists, experts and technicians, who presented papers on eight thought provoking issues. Officials of the SPCB, OERC and different industrial houses took part in the seminar.
