Titlagarh: Amid income tax raids on liquor traders' establishments at various places in Odisha, police have arrested a man for robbing a doctor of Rs 1 lakh by posing as a CBI official in Balangir district.
Though the identity of the accused has not been confirmed yet, preliminary investigation revealed the he introduced himself as Smith Kumar Seth to the police.
As per reports, Seth reached the house of pediatrician Gopabandhu Sahu in Balangir Road in a white four wheeler. He introduced himself as a CBI official and said there are allegations of evading income tax against the doctor. Then on the pretext of taking stringent action against Sahu, the accused went towards his wadrobe and seized Rs 1 lakh cash from him before leaving the place.
Later, Sahu's wife informed her brother about the incident. Suspecting foul play, they informed the police who then informed their counterparts at Saintala and arrested the accused at Naveen Chowk.
Official sources said the car of the accused has been seized along with his arrest. "The accused said his name is Smita Kumar Seth but we are confirming his identity. Investigation is underway," they said.
Meanwhile, the fake raid has triggered public concern among the ongoing IT crackdown on liquor dealers in the State.
