Fake currency note racket busted in Odisha; four arrested

Local police today forwarded to court four persons, including two wome,n on charges of running a fake currency racket in Odisha’s Brahmapur city.

The accused are Chandrama Panigrahy, Gita Pradhan, Susant Samal and Niranjan Behera, police said.

According to the police, IIC Gopalpur police station P P Jena received a phone call on Thursday from a shopkeeper at the Gopalpur sea beach that two women Chandrama Panigrahy and Gita Pradhan had given him currency notes of 100 rupee denomination which he suspected to be fake.

Police said after seizing the currency notes from the shop, it raided the house of Chandrama Panigrahy and seized the fake currency notes of 100 and 50 rupee denominations.

On interrogation, Chandrama disclosed that the currency was being supplied by one Niranjan Behera of Chanchada Sahi under Gosani Nuagaon police limit. She also revealed that another person named Susant Samal of Nilakanthanagar was also involved in the racket, police said.

After extracting this information from Chandrama, two police teams were formed and the houses of Susant Samal in Nilakanthanagar and Niranjan Behera in Sadananda Vihar of Chanchada Sahi locality were raided simultaneously, it added.

Police said it seized a few printers and ink bottles, some full and others empty, along with currency notes printed on A-4 paper and damaged printed notes from the house of Susant Samal. It also seized currency notes, along with paper cutter, zink ball pen, seal embossed with the head of Mahatma Gandhi, paint, wood thinner, glass plate etc. from the house of Niranjan Behera.

On interrogation, it was found that Susant Samal was printing the currency at his home and delivering it to Niranjan Behera for making water mark and silver line on the currency and then supplying to Chandrama Panigrahi for circulation.

Police said a case was registered in this connection at Gopalpur police station under sections 420/489 A/ 489 B/489 C/ 489 D/489 E/120 (B)/34 of IPC against the accused persons Chandrama Panigrahy, Gita Pradhan, Susant Samal and Niranjan Behera leading to their arrest.
