Family fed poo in Odisha over superstition

Berhampur: Superstition still prevails in an era of science and technology in human society where the family members were tortured, beaten up and fed feces.

The incident occurred in Balighai village under Soroda police limit in Ganjam district where Bijay Bisoi and his family were victims of superstition.

Bijay along with his wife and son was forced to have feces for failing to meet the villagers’ condition to pay Rs 5 lakh fine.

Police arrested 15 persons in this connection and forwarded to the court yesterday.

According to reports, Bijay and his family were exiled from the village since 2013 for allegedly practising sorcery. The villagers alleged the family of doing black magic after few died of snake bite in the village.

After being exiled from Balighai, Bijay and his family were staying on outskirts of village. When his youngest son Rohit approached the villagers to return to the village, the villagers convened a meeting on July 1 and asked the family to pay Rs 5 lakh as fine.

However, Bijay expressed his inability to pay huge amount following which the irate villagers had confined him, his wife and elder son in a room overnight on July 2. Next morning, they were fastened to a pole in school veranda and beaten up mercilessly by few people, hired by the villagers. Later, the family was fed poo. Other villagers were the mere spectator as they did not have courage to raise their voice against the act.

Meanwhile, Bijay managed to escape the spot and lodged a complaint with Soroda police following which 15 persons were arrested.
