Family was clueless about Brunda’s intent to commit suicide: Odisha Agri Min

Bhubaneswar: Deceased farmer, Brunda Sahu’s family had no prior knowledge about his intention to set fire to his crops nor had they any idea about his intent to commit suicide before his death, stated Odisha Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout here today.

Rout said as per the statement of family members of the deceased farmer recorded by the District Collector and the SP, the family came to know about Brunda setting fire to his crops and his suicide from television reports.

“SP and Collector visited his house and inquired from his family members. His family members said that their father had never discussed his crops with them and he had not taken loans from any bank or cooperative though he had accounts with different banks. He had never spoken about his paddy crop with them. According to their statement, he took his breakfast at 8 am and went to have a look at his fields and there he set fire to it. We didn’t know that. We saw on the TV that our fields have been set afire. On the day he committed suicide, we came to know about it after watching TV in the evening, otherwise we had no idea about his suicide,” informed Rout this evening quoting from the reports received from Bargarh District Collector and SP.

Quoting from the reports, Rout said that Brunda had grown paddy on 16 acres of land out which six acres were affected due to pest attack and he had set 16 decimals of it on fire.

Notably, Brunda Sahu, a farmer of Kalapani village in Bargarh district had allegedly committed suicide on November 1, a day before setting fire to his paddy field affected by pest attack.
