The fate of former Odisha Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik has been sealed in the ballot boxes as voters exercised their franchise in the Godda by-poll held today.

It remains to be seen whether Marik manages to maintain fiefdom over the voters in Jharkhand.

As many as 15 candidates were in the fray in the Godda by-poll where there is a triangular contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Amit Mandal, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Sanjay Prasad Yadav and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Sanjeev Marik.

Notably, Amit Mandal is the son of the deceased MLA and a political neophyte. He was pitted against former Odisha cadre IPS Sanjeev Marik who joined JMM recently.

JMM President Sibu Soren and his son Hemant were among the star campaigners who garnered votes in support of Marik.

Voters in huge numbers turned out to cast their votes. Around 65 per cent voting was recorded in Godda assembly segment and the polling passed off peacefully. For this, the election commission had made elaborate security arrangements.

The election commission had declared 80 booths sensitive in Godda.

The results will be declared on May 19.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of BJP legislator Raghunandan Mandal in January this year.

Apart from Godda, Panki also went to by-poll today.
