Bhubaneswar: Altogether 305 candidates, including BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, are in the fray for the second phase Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in Odisha on May 20 (tomorrow).

Five Lok Sabha seats—Bargarh, Sundargarh, Balangir, Kandhamal and Aska—and 35 Assembly seats under them will go for polling in the second phase polls in the state on Monday.

Altogether 40 candidates are trying their luck for the five Lok Sabha seats while as many as 265 nominees are in the fray for 35 Assembly segments in the second phase elections.

The Chief Minister is contesting from two Assembly seats—Hinjili under Aska Lok Sabha segment and Kantabanji under Bolangir Lok Sabha constituency—in the 2024 polls.

The BJD supremo is fighting the polls from Hinjili seat for the sixth time in a row while he is trying his luck from Kantabanji seat for the first time in his political career.

Patnaik had also fought from two seats—Hinjili and Bijepur in Bargarh district—in 2019 Assembly polls in Odisha. He got elected from both seats. But, the BJD supremo later vacated the Bijepur segment.

Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Jual Oram is contesting the polls from Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat for the eighth time.

The five-time Lok Sabha MP has been pitted against BJD nominee and Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Congress candidate Janardan Dehury.

Former BJP Odisha unit president and Balangir royal family scion KV Singh Deo is trying his luck once again form Patnagarh Assembly seat under Bolangir Lok Sabha constituency. Singh Deo has been pitted against sitting MLA and BJD nominee Saroj Meher and Congress candidate Anil Meher.

Singh Deo’s wife and Balangir MP Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo is seeking re-election from the same seat on a BJP ticket.

Sangeeta will take on BJD nominee and former minister Surendra Singh Bhoi and Congress candidate and actor Manoj Mishra from Balangir.

Former Union Minister Dilip Ray has entered the fray from Rourkela Assembly seat under Sundargarh Lok Sabha segment. Ray, as BJP candidate, is contesting against minister Sarada Nayak of BJD and Birendra Nath Patnaik of Congress.

Achyuta Samanta (BJD), Pradip Purohit (BJP), Suresh Pujari (BJP), Susant Singh (BJD), Dipali Das (BJD), Niranjan Pujari (BJD), Tukuni Sahu (BJD), Kalikesh Singh Deo (BJD), Santosh Singh Saluja (Congress), Ramesh Chandra Jena (Congress), Pradip Amat (BJD) and Bikram Arukha (BJD) are some of the prominent candidates in fray for the second phase polls in Odisha.
