Keonjhar: A goods train hit a female elephant killing the animal on the spot near Jagannathpur village in Champua area of Odisha's Keonjhar district, today.

Though caution order was in place, the accident, which took place between 5 am and 6 am, could not be prevented. Fog might have reduced the visibility in the area, the Keonjhar DFO said.

On being informed, the concerned Railway officials and a veterinary team rushed to the spot.

A Joint Task force in the office of PCCF Wildlife was monitoring the incident.

Further probe into the matter was underway, the DFO added.
