Ganjam, Mar 4:
At a time when wildlife activists have launched an online campaign – #GiantRefugees – urging Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to protect the elephants, the death of a calf in Ganjam district paints the sorry state of affairs in the state.
Heart-wrenching, a pachyderm was seen guarding her calf’s body near a pond in which the junior fell to death.
The calf was found dead this morning in a pond in Giredi village under Bhanjanagar Forest Range in Ganjam district.
Forest officials failed to recover body of the baby elephant as the mother elephant kept guarding the carcass.
However, the officials managed to recover the carcass after two hours as the mother elephant left the spot.
