Fire safety measures at Odisha COVID hosps to be reviewed

Bhubaneswar: Hours after the tragic fire mishap at a COVID-19 hospital in Ahmedabad that claimed the lives of eight patients, Satyajit Mohanty, DG, Odisha Fire Services today directed for review of fire safety measures at COVID hospitals and COVID care centres across the state.

Assistant Fire Officers and Deputy Fire Officers have been asked to visit the healthcare facilities under their respective jurisdictions and review the fire safety measures and deficiencies.

They will also advise the hospital authorities on taking proper fire safety measures.

Notably, a fire broke out at COVID-19 designated Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad killing eight patients– five men and three women. They were being treated at the ICU ward. The fire broke out around 3.30 am on the fourth floor of the four-storey hospital.

Around 40 other COVID-19 patients at the facility were rescued and shifted to a civic hospital in the city. Primary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, police said.
