First flood water from Hirakud dam to be released on Aug 14

Sambalpur: In view of increasing water level at Hirakud reservoir following incessant rain, authorities decided to release water from it on August 14.

The first flood water of the year will be released from the dam at 11.00 am on August 14, informed Hirakud Dam Chief Engineer Sunil Nayak.

The water level in Hirakud dam continues to rise following heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River.

Currently, the water level of the reservoir stands at 610.85 ft at 9.00 hrs against water storage capacity of 630 ft. Around 2,02,368 cusec water is entering into the dam and water outflow is 17,803 cusec.

In view of water inflow rise in the dam, 611.45 ft water is expected by today, an official source said.

Worth mentioning, the water level had declined in the reservoir constructed on the Mahanadi River due to subdued monsoon.

Even hydroelectricity production was affected following suspension of release of water to power channel.
