Five persons were arrested today for allegedly defrauding Rs 40 lakh on the pretext of providing jobs in Odisha's Rourkela.

The arrested were identified as Prakash Pradhan, Sanitary Inspector of Rourkela Municipal Corporation, OSAP constable Sushil Dungdung, Suni Minj and Amit Minj, both staff of Rourkela Steel Plant, and Anil Minj, a class-IV employee of the municipality.

According to sources, they had duped several job aspirants to the tune of Rs 40 lakh on the pretext of recruiting them at Rourkela Steel Plant and other government organizations by giving them fake joining letters.

Four luxury vehicles, two bikes and as many as 30 bank accounts in their names have been seized by police.

"Sunil Dungdung took Rs 2.5 lakh from us on the promise of providing jobs at Rourkela Municipal Corporation and didn't return our money," the complainant said.

"When a person lodged a complaint at Sector-3 police station regarding fraud on the pretext of providing jobs, we started investigation into the matter. During probe, it came to fore that a racket is working behind it. We have so far arrested five persons in this connection and seized several accounts of different banks. Many bank transactions will be freezed," said PK Mishra, Rourkela DSP.
