Flirting on Facebook turns ugly; Odisha woman cheated of Rs 2 lakh

Bhubaneswar: Facebook flirting turned ugly for a married woman in Odisha capital after she was duped of over Rs 2 lakh by a youth whom she met on the social-networking site a while ago. The victim, a resident of Mancheshwar area here, alleged that she was promised a lucrative job in exchange of the money.

Sources said the woman, who is a native of Bhograi area of Balasore district, befriended with the accused on Facebook a few days ago. The friendship that began with playing online game ‘Hugo’  together, later developed into an intimate relationship. As per the complaint lodged by the woman,  the accused cheated her of a whopping amount of Rs 2,22,000 assuring her to get her a manager’s job in a private company.

The woman also alleged in the absence of her husband, the accused once visited her house, intoxicated her and later established physical relationship with her.  He also clicked pictures and recorded a video of the entire act and later started blackmailing her with the same.  After uploading the pictures and video on social media, he started demanding another Rs 2 lakh from the woman for deleting the same. Hapless, the woman narrated her plight before her husband seeking help.

Things turned bizarre three days ago after the accused called up the woman for a meeting at a restaurant in Khandagiri area. When the couple went there, the accused demanded the money. Realizing that the couple might not give him the asked amount, he snatched the woman’s mobile phone and gold jewelry there beside misbehaving with her. He also thrashed her husband when he tried to intervene before fleeing the spot.

The couple later lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police, following which the cops initiated a probe into the matter. However, the fraudster was not nabbed until the last report was filed.
