Floodwater receding in all major rivers barring Mahanadi, Brahmani in Odisha

The flood situation in Odisha has improved marginally as the floodwater in all major rivers was showing a receding trend except Mahanadi and its tributaries, Brahmani and Subarnarekha, official sources said this morning.

Sources in the Water Resources department said while Mahanadi was flowing above the danger mark at Mundali barrage at Naraj near Cuttack, there was no further rise in the water level since 9 pm last night.

Water level of the river last night stood at 26.70 metres against the danger level of 26.41 metres.

In Cuttack, the floodwater of Kathjodi and Devi rivers—branches of Mahanadi— were flowing over the danger mark at Cuttack and Alipingal in Jagatsinghpur district respectively.

Besides, other branch rivers—Kushabhadra, Bhargabi, Devi, Daya, Dhanua and Prachi— were also flowing over the danger mark in Puri and Jagatsinghupr districts, reports said, adding,  the water level of these rivers would rise further in the next 24 hours and affect Delang, Kanas and Gop blocks in Puri district.

At Indupur in Kendrapara district, floodwater of Brahmani was flowing over the danger mark while at Rajghat in Baleswar district, water level of Subarnarekha was flowing over the danger mark.

Barring these rivers, flood waters of Baitarani, Budhabalanga, Bansadhara and Rushikulya were receding.

Meanwhile, reports from Banki in Cuttack district said the floodwater of Renuka nullah entered the Banki bazaar this morning forcing panicked traders to close down their shops.

In Aul block of Kendrapara district, road connection to 10 panchayat has been severed due to overflowing of floodwater of Kani at a height of 5 feet on Manpur-Gobindpur road at Ghosara village.

Road connection in Rajkanika block in Kendrapara block has been disrupted as the floodwater of Kharasrota was flowing at a height of three feet over the Cuttack-Chandbali road at Ganjaghati under Aul block.

Three panchayats of Marsaghai and Derabis blocks in Kendrapara district have been surrounded by the floodwater of Karandia river following a breach in the river embankment at Basapur village.

Similarly, floodwater of Salandi riverhad submerged Chandbali-Bhadrak road at Nalugunda thus disrupting road connection between Chandbali and Bhadrak.

In Bargarh district, the back water of Hirakud dam has entered five villages of Ambabhona block. The district administration has evacuated 1300 people from these villages, reports said.

In Puri district, a breach occurred in the embankment of Bhargabi river at Totapada in Balanga block has entered several villages.

One person was killed and two others were seriously injured following a house collapse at Barehigoda village of Harichandanpur block in Keonjhar district this morning.

In Khordha district, five villages of Balipatna panchayats have been surrounded by floodwater of Mahanadi, the reports said.
